HbA1c: what it is, values and what high or low means
The share of haemoglobin in your red blood cells that has glucose attached. Red cells live about 120 days, so it averages the past few months. It shows the longer trend that one glucose reading can miss. Clinicians use it, with other tests, to assess diabetes and prediabetes.
Values
Ranges vary by method. No optimal band is shown — none narrower than the lab’s is widely agreed.
| Type | Value | Units | Laboratory | Sex | Age |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Value awaiting review | 4.0–5.6 | % | Not specified | Not specified | adults |
These values come from content awaiting review. The laboratory is unspecified and their classification as intervals, thresholds or targets has not been verified. Discuss the interval on your report with your doctor.
What affects the result
- Diet, activity, sleep and body weight shape it over months. Anaemia, recent blood loss and some haemoglobin variants can make it read falsely high or low.
